Wood Finish

Product Description

Log FinishProfile: Mountain XT is a phenomenal Deck Stain and Log Finish. It is super tough outside and doesn't have any poisons common to typical deck stain and log finish. The cashew resin doesn't support mold, mildew and algae growth and can be washed and maintained, year after year, with relative ease. It gets brushed and rolled into the deck, siding or logs and looks absolutely rich and fantastic!

Sheen & Coverage: Mountain XT is essentially a flat deck stain & log finish. It does nourish the wood so a better desription may be that it has a very soft, Matte Finish when one coat is applied. Some people apply more than one coat. Multiple coats will have more sheen. This will be semi gloss at first and then over the first 3-6 months as it cures and hardens, it will dull down to a nice Satin to Eggshell finish . This is the optimum sheen for long term durability on Vertical surfaces. Sft / gl Coverage is excellent averaging as much as 500 sft / gl on pressure treated decks and up to 740 sft / gl on pine logs. Weathered, Rough Sawn, soft and porous woods will use more product, typically 200-400 sft/ gal.

What's not in it? NO BENZENE! Made from Cashews! NOT toxic NMP like water based polyurethane, NOT Mineral Spirits or poisonous petrochemical based solvents. There are no isocayanates used in the manufacturing process. These dangerous chemicals can infiltrate the communities near them. We don’t support isocyanate manufacturing, which is why we avoid all Polyurethane.

Deck Stain

Deck Stain Colors

Sample pints are the best way to check a deck stain color on your deck wood variety. The chart below is a printable pdf link that is a fair representation of the stain color.

Stain Injection Syringes are also available. With these pure colorant injectors you can customize your stain colors to practically any color you want. Add more for darker more opaque colors. Add less for lighter more transparent colors. We use complex UV Resistant, Fade Resistant pigments. Syringes are marked, so exact measurements are very easy to replicate.

Deck Stain Colors affect longevity of deck stain. Lighter colors don't stop UV Radiation as well as Darker colors. The Stain Selection chart below has the colors marked with an * indicating more deck stain durability.

Finding the Best Deck Stain Color

Natural Deck Stain Tones: If you want a natural deck stain tone, such as you want the natural wood to appear then you will need to make a decision. Unless you want your deck to turn grey quickly a color is required. The best colors to use for a natural toned deck are Honey 11 and Light Cedar 14. These both look great, very natural tone, good clarity, light stain colors, and hold up very well under sunlight. For light tones with some more color Acorn 01, Sage 19 (great on Pressure Treated) or Jute 13 can be brightening yet still earthy. Light Honey 15 is the lightest color but won't give much protection from UV Radiation.

Midrange Deck Stain: For a midrange deck stain the Brown Cedar 04, Cool Leaf 08 and Rosewood 18 are gorgeous. These offer deep, rich colors that block a relatively large amount of UV Radiation while holding their color with minimal fading over the years.

Deep Toned Deck Stains: For a longer lasting deck stain a deep tone is great. For those who don't want to redo their deck for a long time this is a good way to go. Bark 03, Fawn 09, Warm Cinnamon 24 and arguably Brown Cedar 04 could also make it into this category. All these stain colors have historically great color retention.

Ultra Deep Toned Deck Stains: For longest lasting deck stain these ultra deep tones are the best. These are the kinds of colors you can put on and forget about for a good long time. Toffee 23 and Raisin 17 have proven to last through high altitude, heavy snow, intense sunlight and still protect the flat horizontal, brutally weathered deck boards.

Now, keep in mind that this ultra deep tone durability is mostly due to opacity and the fact that we put our deck stains into high density resins not cheap petrochemical poisons like mineral spirits. You can use the Stain Injection Syringes to increase the opacity of any of the other colors as desired. Just squeeze into the can and stir. Stop when you like it. This will increase durability of any of the colors.

Customizing: Stain Injection Syringes can be mixed and matched to create any color you desire.

Dealing with Black Mold, Mildew and Algae Stains

Black Mold, Mildew, Algae and Washability: Mountain XT does phenomenally well with harsh weather conditons. It resists mold and mildew stains because it washes easy and has cashew resin. When a Clear 00 topcoat is applied the stain resistance to mold and mildew stains is better, incredible really. The Cashew resin itself is very strong and has inherent resistances to things that normally ruin deck stains and exterior stains. By applying a top coat you will be able to wash your wood and things will not be able to bite into the wood as easily. Top coats are not for all horizontal surfaces so if you are unsure read Wood Types or use the ASK EARTHPAINT tool and let us know what you are coating.

Mountain XT has fantastic inherent microbrial stain resistance from the patented cashew technology. Water beads up and rolls off. For added protection we’ve added Zinc Borate which is used for extra defense against UV Radiation, algae stains, fungi stains and wood bored holes.

Log Finish

BIOCIDES VS CASHEW: Brutal biocides and mildewcides like Butyl Carbamate, Copper-8-Quinolinolate and Benzene are absolutely unnecassary because of how strong the Cashew resin is. As safe as it is, it is still a good idea to wear gloves and keep your skin clean. A strong resin like this can cause a rash in some people. Mountain XT is the best deck stain, log & exterior stain because it lasts, has no petrochemical poisons, or biocides and we can grow it back forever but remember to read the instructions!

Sustainable Wood Finish

Mountain XT is the worlds first renewable and natural, Exterior Grade Urethane! No Isocyanates are used in its manufacture. Our Cashew Resin resists UV Radiation as well as stains like Mildew, Fungi, Algae, Water and Chemical stains. This sustainable deck stain and log & siding finish gets exceptional coverage per gallon requiring less product to complete the job. Mountain XT isn't just a petrochemical oil that soaks wood. It is not going to stay wet in the wood like some Log Finish. It is going to dry to a hard protective film that resists the harshest weather and black mold stains.

As a penetrating decking stain Mountain XT will be very easy to maintain and all of the true definition and character of the deck and logs will be right up front and visible. This is a great exterior stain. You just brush or roll it into the deck and it soaks deep into the decking fibers providing, natural and long lasting wood protection. XT will dry slowly and deeply into the wood as zinc borate and cashew resin lock out unwanted weather and such. Our dense cashew resin won't evaporate out like high voc stains that are loaded with solvents.

This resin is so thick in the barrel you could jump on it. But that's not how we turn it into the worlds best deck stain, log & exterior stain. We can't disclose that secret but we can say the waste from the cashew is actually recycled into resin! To be clear: All the Cashew food still goes to the market! This is very encouraging for sustainability reasons; no petrochemicals, no food supply interruption, waste by products reused, all to create the worlds toughest exterior finish.

Application Summary

How to apply Deck Stain

Square Foot Coverage: Figure up to 740 Sft / gal on most new logs, decks and wood that is not greatly weathered. On weathered, porous wood, logs and decks figure 300-500 sft / gl. On rough sawn wood or rough shakes figure 200-400 sft/gl.

First Coat, Stain Application: Brush, Spray or Roll one generous coat of stain into the deck, log or siding. Brush into thirsty wood until it stops drinking it up. Allow to soak in overnight. Don't allow to puddle. Back brush or dry brush product into the wood to insure all product penetrates in and does not lay on surface.

Top Coat With Clear 00: XT is available in Clear 00. This cashew based film resists Black Mold stains the most. It can be applied on top of Mountain XT stain or better yet over Rainforest Sealer which is a flexible base coat. As soon as the first stain coat dries, come back and apply a second and / or third Clear Top Coat to the wood. Brush, Roll or Spray until the wood no longer accepts more product and builds a good strong film.

Dilute: Pure Citrus Solvent or Corn Solvent. Diluting Mountain XT is not necessary but can be done as indicated on the label at the users discretion. It is helpful to have some solvent on hand for clean up or in case the wood you are coating is not as absorbent as you would like. Solvent helps the product soak in more but raises voc levels. Both solvents that we use are renewable and biodegradeable.

Dry: Allow 24 hours to dry. If humidity level is high Mountain XT will take longer to dry.

Health Precautions: Contains resin from the Cashew Nut. Cashew Nut resin is a strong resin that replaces highly toxic carcinogens and biocides. Certain sensitive individuals can get a temporary rash from cashew resin. Some people who are highly sensitive to poison ivy may become sensitive to cashew resin as well, use care to avoid a rash. Wearing gloves, goggles and skin protection are recommended. Sensitive individuals should use Rainforest Sealer, which is a similarly awesome, all natural flat deck stain and exterior stain. Always read Technical Data Sheet (TDS), MSDS, Labels and Instructions.

Maintenance Recoats: Inspect annually. Wash with Lime Clean Wood and Deck Cleaner and recoat with Mountain XT as needed. Build up the high weather exposure areas with multiple coats so they are good and strong and can endure without the need for much maintenance. Sand glossy surfaces first.

Clean Up:Earth Clean and Water.

Mountain XT Clear 00 Topcoat Information

Clear Weather Barrier Topcoat on Vertical Surfaces: For the best, longest lasting exterior wood finish apply a clear top coat of Mountain XT over your Rainforest Sealer stain. Apply Mountain XT Clear 00 on vertical surfaces (siding / rails) and leave the horizontal surfaces (decks / floors) with one penetrating stain coat of Mountain XT or Rainforest Sealer.

Apply Mountain XT clear 00 over the Rainforest stain, until the wood fibers are completely covered. This is a super long lasting wood finish that resists greying and black mold stains better than anything we have seen. With this hard, weather barrier film your wood will stay dry and safe. You will be able to wash the surface down with a hose every spring and keep your home looking great year after year.

Bolstering a Mountain XT Clear 00 Top Coat: Optional. It can be helpful to come back after the first 12-24 months and brush on another coat of Clear 00. Although the wood may look perfect at this point it is a good time to bolster the coating. Wood that is freshly coated tends to settle into its new coating. It dries out slowly and condenses firmly into it's new fully encased protected state. At this point it is good to give it a fresh coat to bolster the outer barrier and really seal the wood. This reduces prep in the long run and increases the overall longevity of the the Clear 00 topcoat. Washing the surface and brushing on a topcoat goes very fast and uses a relatively small amount of product. We have regularly gotten over 700 sft / gallon when bolstering a Clear 00 Top coat. By doing this the overall maintenance is reduced. .

Cimate Regions: High moisture, mold and mildew climates do best with a darker stain and a Clear 00 top coat. Mountain XT has proven itself through intense cold, snow and ice. A top coat of Clear 00 is not recommended for desert conditions where high intensity sunlight persists relentlessly. A single penetrating coat of Mountain XT Stain with a darker stain color does well in these climates.
