Our Story

Earthpaint was founded by Tom Rioux, a seasoned expert in paints and plasters who fell severely ill from the toxins in the paints he was exposed to.  After years of recovery, Tom decided it was imperative to see if non-toxic paint could be made that was as good, or better than conventionally made paints. It has been his passion ever since.

Tom explains, “I was unhappy with the non-toxic paints available and I wanted to see if it was actually possible to make the professional grade paints that I was used to, without the poisons that made me sick. “

With decades of experience under his belt Tom knew exactly how to get the job done in the fastest most effective way.  He worked closely with a large variety of experts from some of the biggest names in the industry. He combined this with his extensive practical knowledge of paint to achieve the exciting finishes now available from Earthpaint.

Tom exclaims, “These finishes are better than any of the paints I’ve used in the past 25 years. I love the performance, sustainability and safety. Plus, I’ve never seen better looking walls!”

Things you will NOT find in our paints that are common in many paints (even low voc):

• Formaldehyde emitting biocides (the standard).
• Toxic Petrochemical Solvents.
• Acrylic Polyurethane’s with TEA and N-Methyl Pyrrolidone – very dangerous to fetal development / pregnancy, has low odor in waterborne paint.
• Ethylene Glycol, a sweet tasting poison. Dogs drink it and die. We consider it dangerous. It’s in many paints at the big box stores.
• Alkyl phenol ethoxylates (a.k.a. APES - a known problem for human and aquatic life worldwide), found in many colorants.
• Isoaliphatics (mineral spirits in disguise - Isopar is an Exxon brand name for petro-chemical based isoparaffinic solvents)
• Oximes (e.g., methyl ethyl ketoxim – common anti-skinning agent in oil based paints that is not necessary to make quality products.
