Hi,
I talked to someone recently on the phone about lime prime and I'm getting ready to order five gallons. But we are also refinishing floors ourselves. White oak. When we had the upstairs done professional, they used Bona Early American stain and then Bona water based low voc finish.
I'm a health nut and want no toxins, but I also have small kids who are hard on floors. The Bona water based seems to be ok but took a week to cure and seems to be better for lower traffic areas (though they said retail places use it!)
So is nano tech even stronger? Similar? I know the strongest is oil based but you lose brain cells with that stuff.
Does it leave a matte finish, semi gloss, or gym finish?
And last, I see there's are many colors to choose from....is it a stain and finish all in one? Which would likely be closest to early American? I want to add a sample pint to my cart but I don't want to add like five different colors as it is $$.
Last, is this better than the professional 1k finish you sell??
Thank you,
xxxxxx

Hi xxxxxx,
Yes. When replacing toxic conventional finishes these are the two clear coats I generally lean towards most. NanoTech is the best choice for what you are coating. It's easy to apply and has a very good health profile, especially compared to other floor finishes. The Easy Safe 1k is a gloss. It's extremely strong, scuff resistant and easy to apply. It has been outperforming more toxic 2k floor finishes but this is a product that should air out for two days since we want it to cure more before our customers use it. It's fast dry and low odor and better than any professional floor finish I've seen.
I personally do well with Easy Safe 1k as far as chemical sensitivities go and I'm on the severe end of that spectrum. I wouldn't hesitate to compare Easy Safe 1k to Bona's 2k floor finishes which are well made but not something I can use. The 2k finishes are usually mixed with isocyanates on the job site, so this chemical is in the house or building. While these 2k finishes are often not aired out before use, I've found they need a couple months at least to stop releasing irritants into the air so I'm not affected. So, Easy Safe 1k is definitely the best, most advanced technology that replaces these more toxic 2k Floor Finishes I've ever seen. No on site isocyanate mixing and no hurry to use up the product before it cures! Very low odor. Incredible beauty, build, clarity, strength and scuff resistance. It's an amazing product to replace what professional floor finishers use on high traffic / high end floors but it's not ideal for home owners unless they want to try to apply a professional grade finish.
NanoTech is the most common choice for residential contractors, diy or homeowners doing their own contracting work on floors. Contractors like it since it's fast and easy and they can apply two coats in one day. It's often used to help reduce off gassing by coating over conventional floor finishes. It's exceptionally durable and easy to apply and we haven't found any need to air it out after. It smells clean and dry within hours - with no free isocyanates. We usually walk on it in a few hours and gently move in after 6-12 hours depending on atmospheric conditions.
NanoTech Clear 00 can be mopped on in Clear coats over white oak floors with one of our T-bars or floor mops. It's a high satin / semi gloss sheen but not as shiny as Easy Safe 1k. Most consider it a satin after living with it a while. We also apply NanoTech Clear 00 over stain. NanoTech comes in many stain colors and it's excellent when a fast drying, low odor floor stain is needed. However, water based floor stains are not easy to apply. You have to do a few boards across the room at a time and watch for lap marks.
The best floor stain is Bio Poly Natural, which is pine and beeswax based and very beautiful. Bio Poly Natural in Mountain Laurel or Mountain Laurel Deep may get in the neighborhood of the Early American stain you mentioned but not exact. This color looks excellent underneath both products outlined above since they both are crystal clear and reveal the depth and beauty of the wood grain nicely. Bio Poly Natural is one of the safest, non toxic floor finishes we make. So it goes well with NanoTech.
Cappuccino or Butter Toffee are two others to consider. There is a PDF oak floor stain chart on the product page which uses a balanced grey background to help show contrast index and compensate for monitor variations.
Sample pints are a good idea. Hopefully this helps narrow it down.
Best wishes,
Tom
